STAR OF PEACE AWARDS OFFERED FOR THE BEATLES!

The following listener post was made on 2014 May 21st to National Public Radio's "The TakeAway" [from WNYC] with John Hockenberry, at www.thetakeaway.org.

The question to listeners [in context of an interview with David Kinney, author of a new book about Bob Dylan and "Dylanology"] was: "If you had five minutes with your favorite singer or band, who would you choose?  What would you say?"

Here's my answer:

I would say THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!, one and all, to THE BEATLES — on behalf of my generation and the STAR ALLIANCE • FOUNDATION FOR ALL — a grassroots organization that works for peace education and inspiration.

I would [offer THE BEATLES] the STAR OF PEACE AWARD...[begun] in the late 1980's, because their music has consistently influenced world culture at a critical time in the history [of humankind.] It has counterbalanced with insight, passion, hope, and much joy: a lot of the fear, distrust, and irrational insanity, really, that drove nuclear weapons production way beyond the capacity to end the human experiment. (Unfortunately, there is still much work to be done in this regard!)

Recall some of the repertoire — the sheer range, exuberance, compassion, and depth of feeling and understanding their work represents:

I Saw Her Standing There, Twist and Shout, I Want to Hold Your Hand, Good Day Sunshine; Here, There, and Everywhere; Taxman, Lady Madonna, She's Leaving Home, Yesterday, Let It Be, Yellow Submarine, When I'm Sixty-Four, Penny Lane, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts' Club Band, Magical Mystery Tour, Strawberry Fields Forever, Across the Universe, Revolution.

Hey Jude! — It's Been a Hard Day's Night, but With A Little Help From My Friends, We Can Work It Out! ...After all — All You Need is Love!

...Just Imagine if John and George had lived longer....

But hey, let's give thanks for what we had, and what we still have...

Hey Ringo! Hey Paul! See you in the Bay Area [Notes: Ringo performs at San Jose Civic July 13th; Paul...] at Candlestick this summer!...August 14th is my birthday — for real! ...It must be "written in the stars!!!!"
