Drive Peacefully!

Drive Peacefully!

One way individual drivers anywhere can contribute to clean air and a better environment while reducing gasoline and maintenance costs for themselves and others — is to drive more peacefully!

It's actually kind of fun to make a game for oneself: how smoothly can I start and stop this car?  How far ahead can I notice the signals and other driving conditions change?  How little gas can I use while heading into red lights or stop signs coming up instead of unnecessarily stepping on the gas — only to brake or brake hard a few moments later?

In other words: How elegant and peaceful can I be in controlling this vehicle?

It is so silly and wasteful — not to mention unpleasant for everyone at some level — to do otherwise.

Another contribution to peaceful driving is to make a habit of stopping a few feet back from the crosswalk line — at any intersection where pedestrians are present or likely to appear. So much more polite, respectful, safe!  And in all this, it's really more pleasurable to give them a little space from your deadly weapon: your car or truck.

Have fun saving money!  Reduce stress on yourself, your car, and others!  Do your part to save our environment while driving! Drive peacefully!

Editors note: KQED's Forum Show on 88.5 FM in Northern California (or online) was the stimulus for finally expressing this heartfelt sentiment and a couple of little techniques for "Having fun while doing good."  You can also hear my call-in comment (a few minutes past the half-show break), and the rest of the Forum show on the topic of proposed environmental legislation in California, at the following link and Forum show title:
